As part of our EU partnership project on FGM, AkiDwA is seeking to recruit Youth Activator Officer. The project overall goal is to prevent FGM through young people activation. Female genital mutilation is a global concern. In Ireland Akidwa estimate there are 5795 women who have been subjected to FGM and 2015 report by European Institute for Gender Equality estimate there are over 6000 girls at risk of FGM in Ireland. The Criminal Justice (FGM) Act 2012 makes it illegal for someone living in Ireland to perform FGM; however, the hidden nature of this practice poses challenges and risks for many girls in Ireland.
The person will work as part of the team, to ensure that AkiDwA’s strategy, projects and activities are implemented effectively, activities related to Female Genital Mutilation and women’s health
The Role:
Youth Participation officer will work on half time basis (21 hours a week) and the role include-
- Together with CEO Develop work plan for the project with timelines
- Identify and mobilise youth to be involved in the project
- Map and contact all youth grass roots organisations in Ireland and form working group
- Organize workshop with youth grass roots organisations
- Mobilize and recruit at least 20 Young Change Maker (YCM) to fight FGM in Ireland
- With support from the CEO and women health coordinator prepare and produce training manual guide for YCM
- Deliver training to YCM using the manual guide
- Develop and produce a professionals Behavioural Communication Campaigns
- Together with YCM develop and produce stand up (against FGM) plan
- Organize and hold at least two meetings at university, schools, targeting young people
- produce 10 editorial plans for social media coverage
- Organise and hold two dinner meetings during religious or national festivity
- Organise and hold five meetings with religious leader to boost public pledge
- Organise hold one round table meeting with the embassies and consular representations in Ireland
- Organise and hold awareness raising meetings with healthcare professionals, social workers frontline services, affected community including those seeking asylum
- Together with YCM produce action plans to eradicate FGM
- Work in collaboration with other staff working on FGM
Experience and skills (Essential)
- Third Level Qualification at degree level in social science, social care or related field
- Holds a clear knowledge and understanding of the gender analysis of violence against women and understanding of FGM
- Excellent facilitation, training, and communication skills.
- Experience working co-operatively with other organisations and agencies and in relationship building

- Actively listens to ensure clear understanding
- Asks for input from others to ensure clear understanding
- Acknowledges and addresses issues in an honest and non-judgemental way
- Comfortable with IT systems of communication
- Open minded and willing to learn
Location
The position will be based at the AkiDwA Office, Unit 2, Killarney Court, Upper Buckingham Street Dublin 1 but will involve travelling.
