Poem by Adepeju Alice Ayoade
The eyes never lie; that’s what they say.
But what do her eyes tell you?
Does it tell of a shattered heart; are its chambers visible?
Do you see her ghosts?
Lurking and haunting her innermost thoughts
Have you the insight of the world hidden behind her smile
All her life she’s faced hardship,
Some insurmountable; yet she is alive.
Alive, yes; is she really living?
The mirror never lies; the eyes are the mirror of the soul,
She managed to fool the world,
Now she stares, to convince herself,
She screamed and claimed sanity,
But it had long been smothered…
Her life; her soul,
Drained and weary, haunted by the mirror…
